Brief Description:  Elevator Bellcrank/horn

Built the elevator bellcrank that goes between the two horns. This required cutting two halves from .063 4130 steel, bending, welding, drilling pivot tube hole, cutting pivot tube, aligning and welding pivot tube. Once welded, the horn pivot was reamed to .375. As a departure from the plans, I think I am going to use an oilite bushing as the pivot. The plans call for a 4130 tube. This would be a 4130 bearing and race. I don't like to use the same metal in friction joints due to gaulling concerns. Finally, I drilled the locator pin hole for the horns and the holes for the pushrod.

Edit Note: One thing I just noticed while uploading these photos. The pivot bracket on the horizontal tail spar will interfer with the weldment. That is, the mounting bracket edge distance around the mounting bolt is a larger radius than the distance available to the horn. Looking at the plans, it appears that this is an expected interference. I think in the next build session, I will weld in the hole in the horn that accepts the horn pilot pin and move the hole aft about .15 inches. This will then drive an adjustment to the hinge line location....oh well, such is the world of a new design scratch built airplane....
