Well apparently another year went by with little to no progress. I blame my primary job, the F-35, which really stepped up the flight testing this past year. I dabbled with the Nexus over the last year by rebuilding a number of aft fuselage parts several times, but always ended up with either an additional misallignment, or something that just did not fit correctly. This kills motivation. Also, I really struggled with the fact that I needed to refit the fin attach brackets by match drilling holes in the new steel brackets without enlarging the holes in the aluminum fin spar. This took some thought.
Over the past week, I took a Christmas vacation from work, which gave me some time to sort this out. The vertical stabilizer, its new doubler plate, and all the attach brackets have been remade and match drilled. I changed the mounting scheme at the nose of the fin to include a bolt that mounts from the fin to the fuselage, rather than the other way around. This was done because I was not going to have the edge distance I needed if I put the hex head inside the fuselage next to the bulkhead web. But on a side note, it will make it easier to get to the bolt for final assembly (however, unless I can figure out how to do that for the horizontal stabilizer, I will still need to get inside the fuselage to do final assembly).
There is a domino effect when you change something. When I changed the bulkheads to get the twist out, it ended up moving where the hoizontal stabilizer aft attach weldments are. This meant I had to weld up some new attach brackets then carefully fit them to get the right installation angles.
