Brief Description:  Aileron Pushrod Clearance Corrections

With the aft floorboards done, I started to think about finishing out the passenger compartment and building the stub wing components. The first thing I did was to finalize the routing of the aileron pushrod from the guide hole (where the ball bushing will go) back to the control tube weldment in the center fuselage tunnel. When I looked at the routing of the pushrod, it was apparent that I needed to make some adjustments to the clearance holes in every penetration. I think that if the control stick moves 30 degrees in each direction, the pushrod will need to move up and down about 0.9 inches. That means the clearance in the outer wall of the fuselage needs to trim away about .3 inches of the longeron in that area. This may be a conservative clearance, but I would rather address it now when I have easy access to make the clearance adjustments. Since I cut away a bit of the longeron, I decided to make a reinforcement plate to attach to the longeron and skin as shown in Image 1. Once I had the holes properly clearanced to accommodate the pushrod movement (and clearance around it in all positions) I reinstalled the forward floorboards and notice that they will now interfere with the new clearance volume. I suspect that the reason for that is that I left more of a tapered flange for attachment to the side skin than the original design. As a result, my skin is about .25 inches lower than on the prototype. Rather than scrapping the skin and changing the amount of attach area, I choose to just make a small tapered "doghouse" fitting as shown in Image 2. (Image 2 also shows the height of the sidwall attach flange and how far aft the rivets go.) Image 3 also has a better view of the attach flange showing the height I left for rivets. I think the small bump should be relatively unnoticeable under the carpet, and will assure plenty of room around the aileron pushrod.
