Brief Description:  Forward Skin Prep

Trust but verify. Dick gives rough dimensions for initial trimming of the .032 skins, but I am checking that with a paper simulation first. Image 1 shows a paper skin that will be used as a pattern for the aluminum.
I am also looking at some of the clean-up things that need to be done soon. One thing is to make support gussets for the lower longeron terminations at the spar. Looking at drawing 50 (shown in image 2) you can see that the gusset has a 90 degree flange on the bottom. If I look at the 11 x 17 version of the drawing, it does not show the flange. I believe that the full size drawing is a more up to date version, so I think Dick intends that there is a flange on the gusset. However, I do not know what the flange would attach to. The spar cap strips are not wide enough for the whole flange, and I do not believe the longeron is low enough on the spar to allow the gusset to attach full to the web (although there are no dimensions or pictures showing where the longeron terminates) As a result, I am not going to add the flange.
This discussion brings up an observation. Much of the Nexus build requires a good understanding of how a part will assemble later in the process of building. Often key information about a part is not included on the drawing that defines it. Furthermore, sometimes key information is located on sketches that are not on the drawings. You often find yourself leafing through lots of papers trying to get a better understanding of Dick’s intensions. I finally decided that it might be easier to have all the 11 x 17 versions of the drawings located on a wall and displayed at once. As a result, I have created the "wall of drawings and sketches" shown on image 3.
