Brief Description:  Finishing the flaps

Finally, the flaps were ready for closure. The rivets on the top and bottom of the spar are reachable (barely) with a bucking bar, so they were installed with solid rivets. The majority of the nose ribs were closed with pull rivets as was the aft part of the lower skin. After completion, the flaps were reinstalled for a final look. Image 2 shows the right flap in it's trail position. There is good alignment with the aileron interface and the twist in the flap exactly matches the desired trim position. Image 3 shows the completed left flap. The left flap was also installed for a final look. When installed, the left flap matches the aileron well. HOWEVER, as noted during the construction of the trailing edge of the upper skin, there was a slight bow in the straightness of that edge. When installed on the wing, and aligned with the aileron, that bow is bigger than I remember. In fact, I think there may be an additional mis location of the trailing edge that added to the bow. Perhaps this was caused by the slop between a dimpled hole in thin metal and the rivet diameter. Either way, the apparent twist in the flap is now about 1/8 of an inch between the aileron and root. Now, I could hid this when I build the root skin and just match that skin to what I have....but that would not be right and would always bother me. I have stewed on splitting the difference during rigging and other methods of hiding the slight misalignment, but in the end, my OCD is going to make me build another flap since there is really no way to adjust these things once they exist. I figure this decision will add about a month to the build, but there are enough unknowns for me with this design without carrying forward a known rigging issue......so, back to work.
