Brief Description:  Garage Workshop

When I became involved with AM and the Chinook kit, I had already been engaged in a looooong, slooooow, scratch build of a single-seat cub, called a Preceptor Pup, for about four years. I have loved every minute of my work on the Pup, and learned more than I ever might have imagined about working with sheet metal and 4130 steel. During those years, i was able to complete all wing ribs, as well as 95% of the fittings. Eventually though, I ran out of work that I could do iin my small basement shop. Before I could assemble the wings or begin tacking-together the fuselage, I needed a larger space to work in.

I've been in my little house for 18 years, and had always dreamed of converting the detached 1.5-car garage into a shop. Now, through the project, I was up-against the need to do just that. The process started with bringing-in an 8'x12' wooden shed, to hold all of the stuff that used to live in the garage. After that, i brought in a mason to pull out the old macadam floor and replace it with concrete, to code. I did all the framing and interior work on my own, including bringing out 60-amps of power from the house, with the help of an electrician happy to act mostly as an advisor. All-told, the process took me just about a year.

All projects benefit from a deadline, and my garage refurb was pushed by the scheduled arrival of my Chinook kit in early May. As such, the kit came a bit early, but i was able to make a castered cradle for the wings in order to roll them out of the garage in order to finish the work. I also squirreled-away the other half-dozen kit boxes between the shed and basement.

As of Independence Day weekend, 2016, the workshop is ready to go!
