Brief Description:  Swaging Tool Update

Back on 4-22-2010 I wrote about a swaging tool that I had purchased. My first real opportunity to use it came just the other day. However, when I checked the Nicopress part after swaging it with this tool, it had not compressed enough leaving the splice weak.

I searched the internet for information on how to adjust the tool to get the correct setting, but nothing I did worked. Since the time that I purchased this tool back in April I had noticed that both my local Home Depot and Orchard Supply Hardware carry these type of swaging tools. The one at Home Depot was a lot less expensive (a little less than $30), so, since I was unable to adjust the one that I already had, I made a quick trip and purchased the one at Home Depot. After I got home, I did a test Nicopress swage, and it worked just fine passing the caliper and guage checks.

So, I am retiring the original one and will use the new one.

By the way, one thing that I had read on the internet regarding these cheaper swaging tools (ones at aircraft supply places such as Aircraft Spruce cost hundreds of dollars), is that you need to check the results after every swage as they may change over time. Supposidly, this new one has adjustment capabilities so I can deal with those changes in the future. But, heck, even if I had to buy multiples of this tool by the time I complete my project, it would still be a lot cheaper than the "official" tools.
