Brief Description:  Wing Jigs

Van's did not have an exact date yet for my wing kit, but I estimate them to be delivered within 2 weeks. I've got time now to construct the wing jigs (stands) and the build the mobile wing cart. I started by attaching a 4x4 from the floor to the ceiling. There will be 2 of these for each wing stand. I will leave 4' between the stands so I can have enough room to work on the wings. I will be using a threaded rod as the bottom brace on the spar attachment points on the stand. I'll be able to fine tune the level and balance of each spar using the threaded rod. I needed to fabricate L-shaped brackets, so I bought a pice of 1-1/2" x 1-1/2 aluminum angle. I measured and marked the pieces and then drilled holes before I cut out each piece. I then rounded the corners on the sanding wheel and deburred the pieces. The finished bracket is shown in image #1. I used a 1/2" threaded rod, 1 foot long for each stand. The 4x4 post I had are twisted, so I had to compensate by adding shims to the metal angle. I managed to fabricate 4 brackets (I need 8) and put up one 4x4 post. I will take the day off tomorrow and hopefully finish the stands and also the mobile wing cart. This cart is used to place the completed wings in and roll out of the way for storage until I finish the fuselage.
