Brief Description:  Workshop prep

Once we made the decision to build an RV-10, the next step was to make a workshop where we could build it. Fortunately our house has a walk-out basement that has a small garage attached to it (separate from the garage we park in on the main level). We’ve been using the basement garage as a place to store lawn equipment (we have an enormous Scag 72” mower), dirt bikes, and tools, but it’s been kind of a mess and tended to collect grass and spiders with the mower going in and out. One nice thing about it is it’s air conditioned/heated, so I thought it would make a perfect workshop if we cleaned it up and moved some stuff out of there. Another nice thing about it is that it’s easy to access with a trailer. It isn’t big enough to hold an assembled airplane, but it should be big enough to construct each major sub-assembly before moving the parts to our hangar. The hangar is a 25-30 minute drive from the house, so being able to work on the plane at home is a major advantage over starting construction at the airport.

So I spent several days in August cleaning out the main garage (so I could move things there that had been in the basement), and turning the basement garage into a proper workshop. Once I moved everything out of the basement garage (and made two trips to the landfill), I acid-etched the concrete floor and Yuka helped me paint it with gray epoxy. I painted the walls gloss white and installed four LED tube light assemblies. I also installed pegboard in both the main garage and the workshop for tool storage. I didn’t take any “before” pictures, but the “after” pictures show what it looks like now.

For the time being our mower and tractor will park outside under our deck so they’re out of the weather. Eventually I need to build an outdoor shed to house everything.
