Brief Description:  X-10 Cowl Upper and Lower Installation

Sept 22, 2012

This weekend I am finishing up the X-10 Cowl. I have completed the following steps found on page 47-06.

Step (6) Lay out then drill #27 the two most inboard holes common to the F-1001Q L and R Cowl Attach Hinges at the Bottom Cowl. Then I evenly spaced at 1 inch, drill #40 and cleco the five remaining screw holes that attach the Bottom Cowl hinge. In these holes a #8 stainless steel screws will be held with K1000-08 Nutplates.
Step (7) When over the piano hinges I layed out and drill #40 then cleco the holes in common to the F-1001P Left and Right starting at the bottom and working upward. Evenly space the rivets at 1 inch intervals and 5/16 from the Cowl Hinge, this intersects the middle of the Hinge line. Also do the same for the Top Cowl, F-1001N Top Hinges. I debured the Cowl attach hinges and machine counter sink the cowl hinge #40 holes drilled into the fiberglass cowling.
Step (8) Screw in with Panhead #8-32 S.S. screw the F-1001Q Left and Right Cowl Attach Hinges after installing the six K1000-08 Nutplates. Then I carefully riveted with AN426 AD3-4.5 rivets the Cowl Attach Hinges to the top and bottom cowls.
Step (9) With both the Top and Bottom Cowls installed, I clamped and drilled the two additional holes in the front of the Cowl by the Spinner to #19 size.
Step (10) Now take a string from the front of the Cowl where the top and bottom cowl intersect and ran a split line that represents the difference between the Top and Bottom Cowls to form a line that you can cut. I adjusted the line to be equal distance. These sides are where the mating of the Top and Bottom Cowls will meet being held in place with the piano hinge on both sides.
Step (11) I removed the Top Cowl and then used the multi-tool or Dremel to carefully cut the line I previously made. Then I smoothed out any inconsistencies with a long wood block and wrapped with sandpaper.
Step (12) I then added the Top Cowl back onto the X-10. I used the Top Cowl to mark the Bottom Cowl line and the cut the lin
