Brief Description:  Installing the Ameri-King AK-451 ELT inthe Tail Co

May 19th 2012

I completed the PilotLights LED light strip and now both panel lights (Red and White) and the cabin over head White Light dim according or as pilot / co-pilot desires. Then I ordered the ELT that is required for the DAR inspection. I selected an Ameri-King AK-451 ELT. I am about half way through the installation process on this. It is a very nice unit that has the old 121.5 Mhz, the Military SAR 243 Mhz, and the new 406 Mhz (GPS Satellite EPIRB) frequencies. So if you connect it to the Garmin 430 GPS its accuracy is guaranteed to be accurate to within 22 meters. (And I am going to connect it to my GPS as illustrated in the Installation Manual). This is possible by signaling the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite and locating you latest GPS position. You only need about 500 milli-seconds (half a second) of a burst to signal the satellite and then the Search And Rescue or SAR team using the 121.5 and/or the 243 Mhz frequency to home-in on your distress position. Or I guess they use your exact GPS coordinates. It also is portable, as it comes with a carrying case and a portable Whip Antenna for “walking out” when you’re lost in the Amazon or from your crash site. A lot of RV-10 builders mount the regular permanent Antenna under the rear fiberglass Vertical Stabilizer/Horizontal Stabilizer fairing (some even mount there ELT there too), but I am still deciding if this is the correct location, as the instructions say different. They don’t want the extra drag to slow the aircraft down. I still have to register the Ameri-King AK-451 ELT and perform series of tests that the ELT must pass, but I feel safer now that it’s in my airplane. Also after 2- 3/4 years I am number ONE on the Perry Airport hanger List. So soon I can move my project to the T-Hanger. More to come on that.
