Brief Description:  First Engine Start

Oct 20th, 2012

Created a custom cable bracket for the Mixture Control of the X-10. I was able to order a 45 inch Mixture Cable from Vans to replace the longer 51.5 inch cable that was too long. I thought I was going to be able to not notch the FAB as is described in the Vans construction manual however after routing the Mixture Control cable it looks like I will be cutting a small section out of the FAB to facilitate the fit. I ordered the Concord RG-25 Battery to power the avionics and start the engine. The battery supplies 22 amps of starting power that does not seem like a lot of power but is what is recommended for the RV-10.
With all this last minute stuff taken care of I finally decided to start the engine. I spent most of this week preparing and today Saturday 20th I rolled the X-10 out of the hanger, blocked the tires and just as an added precaution I tied the tail of the aircraft to the Tacoma’s bumper. A hanger neighbor who owns a RV-09 was standing ready with a small fire extinguisher just in case of a engine fire.
With 5 gallons of 100 LL AVGAS in each of the wings fuel tanks I followed Airflow’s method of starting and as expected the engine came to life almost instantly. Let run for a couple of minutes at a low idle and then shut down the engine and checked for leaks. There were no leaks and after a 15 minute cool down I restarted the engine and allowed the CHT to achieve no greater than 300 degrees increasing the engine RPM and watching the oil pressure and temp. Then let the engine cool down again and repeated the process until I was reaching 1700 rpms. After four or five start-ups I was satisfied that the engine is working as expected. Now to organize for the DAR inspection next month for the completion.

Time about 30 hours.
