Brief Description:  Weights and Balance of the Aircraft

November 5th 2012
Continued ground testing of the X-10 aircraft. With the full top and bottom cowls installed I tested the aircrafts cowls cooling ability. I ran the aircraft up to 2200 rpms, shut down the engine let cool for 15 minutes and repeated. I ran until the oil temp reached 210 degrees and the #5 cylinder reached 410 degree. Shut down the engine, checked and except for the smell of new paint burning off a little everything seemed to be OK.
I am ordering the longer Hartzell Propeller Governor Arm that attaches to the blue Propeller Control Knob because I was having trouble with the shorter arm hitting the top of the inside of the cowl. I need to install the arm lower to prevent it hitting at the top.
Saturday I drained any fuel left in the tanks in preparation for weighing the aircraft. I rented a set of Tanner Race Car Digital scales for $130.00 (including shipping one way) from Avery Tool in Texas for determining the correct weights and balances for calculating the All important CG of the X-10 aircraft. You must level the aircrafts pitch so as the bubble level is in the center when placed on the aircraft door area longeron. This is the in-flight scenario of the aircraft. If you don’t get your pitch angle correct your weight on the front wheel will be off. Anyway after leveling the aircraft, zeroing out the scales and placing each scale pad under each wheel the numbers were as follows:

Right Wheel: 685 lbs. Arm: 124.4 Moment: 85,285
Left Wheel: 685 lbs. Arm: 124.4 Moment: 85,285
Front Wheel: 342 lbs. Arm: 50.5 Moment: 17,322
Total Weight: 1712 lbs. Total Moment: 187,840

The Empty Center of Gravity or CG of the aircraft was calculated as follows:

CG = 187,840 / 1712 = 109.72 inches

This is within the specific CG envelope of 107.85 to 116.24 inches.

The aircraft was weighted with full flight line leather interior, custom made carpets, full sound proofing, seat belts, full avionics, ELT and the aft oxygen bottle ins
