Brief Description:  RA Miller AVT-4 com and Marker Beacon antenna

02/10/2011
I ordered a very nice and expensive antenna for the top of the X-10. (I already install a RAMI AV-10 antenna on the bottom or belly of the aircraft underneath rear seats). I ordered a RA Miller AVT-4 com antenna from Aircraft-Spruce in Peachtree City, GA. The antenna is only about 13 inches high; horn shaped, and has a VSRL of 3:1 for impedance matching. I was thinking of hiding the communication or COM antenna in the X-10 wing tip a.k.a. Bob Archer style, but have heard that this sacrifices overall COM performance, (and is difficult to get-it-right), you have to tune or trim the antenna, and hence I selected the top area of the X-10.

Also, I have created the Marker Beacon antenna from a 41” piece of RG-400 co-axe cable (stripping off the ground weave) to place in the right X-10 wing tip fairing. Since you are never over 1000 ft above the marker beacons this antenna design is less critical than others. Apparently, according to people in the know, you can get away with just a 40” #12 gage wire just fine connected to a co-axe connector to the Garmin.
