Brief Description:  Landing lights

Started working out the landing lights. I bought the Duckworks 100W halogen kits that fit in the outboard leading edge, and set up a xenon HID ballast and bulb (from ebay - bulbs new, ballasts from an Audi or similar wreck, $300 shipped for a pair) ) in place of the halogen, I made a rig to hold everything and took it outside to play with the distance that the HID bulb needs to be inserted into the par36 reflector. After adjusting the focal length and recording values, the rig was taken apart. The xenon's at 35W are clearly brighter than the 100W halogens I also tried. In pic 3, the house was clearly illuminated at 300+ feet distance, whereas the halogen only marginally illluminated it.
Lastly, I measured the wing, templates, and have decided on further mods tot he kit, including moving the leading edge hole to be cut closer to a rib so that I have more room to slide the lens that fits inside the skin sideways. This is necessary because of another mod - the whole bulb/reflector/back plate will be brought substantially forward to increase light dispersion in these spot beams. Otherwise, the cutout in the wing will block quite a bit of light when they are recessed 6 or so inches as per the plans. I ran this by Don at Duckworks, and he felt this was fine (and admitted his kits for the RV-9 have the lights set back more than the other RV's. So, for the next couple weeks, this light project will be done. Otherwise, the wing is ready for assembly - leading edge, tank, and upper skins are ready to be attached. I'll wait, so I can manipulate the leading edge easier off the wing doing the lights.
