Brief Description:  Finance and Insurance, and Worktables!

I chose to actually finance part of my kit as I didn't want to wait and I had other things I wanted to do with my cash. Joy Thomas over at Pilot Bank has been very helpful at every turn, hopefully we will close within the next two weeks (waiting on factory, not bank). Everything went smoothly until I got to the "builders risk" part. Since I'm building in my garage, the finance company wanted insurance to protect "our" investment. After many emails and phone calls, and several dead ends, I wound up joining EAA and using Falcon Insurance, who have also been very helpful. I was a bit shocked to learn that you really are pretty much un-insurable when the kit is complete (at least with me likely having less than 50 hours total flight time), so I have come to grips with probably just flying with liability while I build my hours. I do plan on going to Searey transition training in 2013 and getting checked out for Amphibious type (Sea Type). I think everything is on track now, just waiting for a close and shipping date. Then comes trying to arrange shipment from Florida to Texas. Fellow Texas Searey builder Mark McLaughlin has also been helpful wading through choices and telling me what he did. I'm hoping to actually get before Thanksgiving so I can get this started!

I noticed in the Searey manual and some of the build photos online that the factory had some carpeted work tables to help with building the frame, wings, elevators, airlerons, stabilizer, etc and I really liked the idea. I had already bought a slick little utility cart from Home Depot with casters that holds 300lbs, so I went and bought another one, topped them both with 5/8" plywood and carpet. I like how they turned out. They can be joined together with a clamp to form one big table, or separated for two smaller ones. Jonathon helped me and keeps asking "When are we going to build the plane?" - I'm thinking about having him call the factory... :)
