I bough the "Almost RV-14" fuselage crossmember modification kit for the RV-6. This kit replaces the wide aluminum fuselage crossmember with a narrow stainless-steel part. It also shifts the crossmember aft. All together. it lets me move the top of the seat back 4" aft. I can also move the seat back bottom about 1" aft before it interferes with the seat belt mounts.
Unfortunately, I have to cut up my newly painted interior to install the mod.
I started by cutting drilling out the rivets that attach the cabin rails and the existing F-605 upper crossmember. Rather than just cut-down the existing doublers per the kit instructions, I decided to just go ahead and make new doublers using the old ones as a pattern.
I clamped the crossmember in place to determine where everything would mount and to make sure all the parts were square. I match-drilled the new parts to the existing holes where applicable. I took the assembly apart and riveted in the new left side crossmember support assembly.
