Brief Description:  Rivet Shaver on the Cheap

I have a couple spots here and there where some rivets sit just a hair proud and could use a little trim. This applies mostly to where I used CS4-4 blind rivets, the head on these is a bit thicker than the usual AD rivet. It's not worth spending $250+ on a rivet shaver for 3-4 rivets.

Rivet shavers run at very high speed so the cutting bit doesn't chatter and grab. Regular drilles generally don't do the job.

I picked up a shaver bit at the surplus store for about $2.00 and put it in my most accurate countersink cage. I then mounted the cage in my air angle-grinder (rated at 20,000 rpm). I drastically under-countersunk some rivets in scrap and then tried to shave them down with my new toy. The setup worked geat an a flat surface and cut the rivet with no problem at all. I tested it on both blind and solid rivets. There was no tendancy for the bit to chatter or grab, just a smooth cut. Curved surfaces would be a challenge, but it can be done.
