Brief Description:  Rudder Pedal Assembly 3

I was out of town for the last couple of weeks so nothing got done. Now that I am back, I decided to tackle fitting the rudder pedal assembly. Before I went away, I did some calculations and determined that the rudder pedals required a minimum of 2.9" throw forward and aft of neutral. This is based on the arm of the rudder bellcrank and the rudder travel specified in the manual (35 degrees).

Being a tall guy (6'4"), I need every inch of legroom I can muster. To allow for some margin I made the forward most position of the pedals be 2.5" from the front of the bearing block to the firewall web. This puts the center of the rudder pedal assembly 4.5" back from the firewall web. Subtract 0.75" for the stiffeners attached to the firewall and I am left with 1.25" of margin. That 1.25" is assuming the pedals are centered over the bearing block when neutral. Most likely, the pedals will be slightly forward of that gining me a bit more margin.

To fit the pedals that for forward I had to trim the ends of the weldment. The forward fuselage has a slight taper and the weldment as provided is cut to fit the 4" position and is to wide for the 2.5" position. As a rusult, as the pedals are moved to the aft adjustment positions, there will be a bit of side-play. If I ever need to use the aft positions, I might put a small spacer in to remove the play. It really isn't a big deal though.

I would like to make some ground (or flight) adjustable pedals, but I'm not sure it is worth the time or effort since I plan to be the primary pilot. My wife isn't a pilot (maybe she will decide to become one). If the need ever comes up, I can always put spacers on the rudder bars and brake pedals to accomodate a shorter pilot.

After the initial most-forward position, I added mounting holes at 3.5" and 4.5" which will give me 2" of adjustment. I also plan to leave the center support full length so the pedals can always be moved farther aft if required.
