I have seen a few builders use this space under the baggage compartment for various missions, including storage for extra engine oil, strobe transformers and the emergency locater transponder. Since this is a little bit easier space to get to then in the rear of the fuselage, I decided to mount my ELT there and will run the antenna back to the space under the fiberglass tail fairing skin. I cut a 7”x 9” hole between the baggage floor ribs, added #8 nutplates around the perimeter and made a cover from .040 2024-T3 aluminum. I probably should have used .032, but I ran out and since I will mount the ELT to the bottom side of the cover, the strength should be good and the weight increase is really offset by not adding another plate in the rear of the plane to mount it.
