Brief Description:  Mounting the brake pedals

This may look simple, and it seemed simple to me until I tried to figure out a way to get the brake pedal master cylinder holes in the right spot. First, there is the mounting frame fuselage angle which is actually sloping down at 5.5 degrees. Then when you set the aft rudder pedal at 90 degrees to the firewall and match the back one to it at the bottom, the forward pedal is actually at 81 degrees because of the 2 ½” distance between them.

What you want is for the brake pedals to be even at the top and at the same angle so when you apply both brakes evenly the stopping power is roughly even. I tried the math method and it wasn’t a sure bet. Then I used the Smart level, but that became impractical to get the job done accurately is a small space. As you can see from the pictures, I finally pulled them out of the plane, jigged the 5.5 degree angle on the bench, clamped the bottom of the pedals to match and used a straight edge to set the top of the brake pedals even and then used a 3/16” center point to scratch the arc on the brake pedal/master cylinder mounting tab, hanger the cylinder at the top tab. I then measured to the center of the arc on the tab and drilled the 3/16” hole.

As you can see from the top view, this came out spot on with everything where it should be. There may be a simpler way to get this done in less then the 6 hours it took me, but I couldn’t figure it out. So far I have seen three or four different ways of doing this, with varying results, but I think this way has the potential to be the most accurate if you take your time and measure everything carefully. Good luck with your technique.
