Brief Description:  Rolling the right elevator leading edge

What a royal pain in the ass this was, no fun to be found here. I have to say that the least amount on fun and the most excitement comes from the free hand forming of the aluminum. I think it sucks but, it has to be done and you just end up going with the flow. If you are looking for perfection, forget about it. This is now art and this is where the armature builder pays a big penalty. I'm sure it would be easy after doing 10, but when you’re bending your pride and joy freehand, it just gives one heartburn. I decided to buy a piece of Oak to from the skin bends at the trim tab and the trim tab because it won't fall apart like cheap particle board and it holds a radius and shape better in my opinion. ($4.00)

Do not use water pipe to roll the leading edge per Van's instruction, and certainly not1/2". It is just too hard and you are asking for trouble. I have found that you have to patiently, coax the skins into the shape you want and wood works much better. If you over do it, the wood is more forgiving and does not seem to leave the marks that the water pipe did. Also, do each section individually, there is too much to bend all at once trying to do the whole leading edged. I finally got a good job out of it, but the pipe that I started with left marks in the skin- use 1" dowel and you will be pleased. You could use 1 1/4" on the bottomed section of the rudder and in board section on the elevator.
