Brief Description:  Alumiprep and Alodine day for the emenage parts

Well I don't think much of the DuPont Variprime self etching primer after I spilled some alcohol on a part and the primer came off. It goes on easy, just some cleaner (MEK) and shoot it, and does not scratch off, but it is not going to stand up to any chemicals in my mind, including gasoline. I think it would be fine if you were to shoot paint over it, but in the interior, that just crazy. I understand there are 50 year old airplanes still flying without any interior protection, but I think a little protection is a good thing and of course it is mandatory on any thing that is not Alclad.

At any rat, I’m changing to epoxy. I have had some experience with Akzo and really liked it, so that’s the way I’m going from now on. I do not plan to do the skins, this just adds time, weight and probably not much longevity, but if the part has been machined, bent, formed, cut or does not have the Alclad, then I’ll do the Epoxy system:

1)Scotch Brite the part (maroon- don’t bother with trying the grey, it’s too fine and takes too long)
2)Alumiprep, its east to use and only take a few minutes if you use a bath, then rinse.
3)Alodine, another soak job for 3-5 minutes and a rinse, it turns the part light yellow. It reminds me of iodine.
4)Let dry, don’t touch the part and then shoot the epoxy primer.
