Brief Description:  Rudder Fitting to VS

So, while re-checking the rod end bearing distance call-outs on DWG 7 I realized, with great consternation, I have been taking the measurements as shown on the drawing and applying them in reverse order to the actual rod end bearings on the rudder.

The distance call outs vary for the three rod end bearings, the distances:
• top 51/64 "
• middle 59/64"
• bottom 67/64"

Mine are essentially the reverse, which explains all of the issues I have with aligning the rudder to the VS.

Upon close inspection of the rudder, I find the rudder counterbalance skin forward of the rudder skin, where it crosses over the top of the VS, has a rivet line which is not straight. With a straight edge, I found the top rib of the rudder, where in common with the counter balance skin, bends downward ~ 1.8".

This is obviously not right. Upon close inspection, I find little blue pieces of plastic sticking out from around the rivets on the counter balance skin.

In conversation with Sterling at Van's - I decide to build a new rudder, as I really do not know the quality of the riveting for the rudder stiffeners, etc. and I will not be happy flying with this rudder even if I were to drill out the counter balance rivets, fix the top rib and re-assemble.
