Brief Description:  Wing Installation

Time to install the wings, which have been sitting in the temporary racks for nearly 6 years. I assumed they would fit, this is after all, a QB and the wings and spar box were fabricated at the factory.

The first attempt was Wed Jan 24, in the evening, with Ken and Rocket assisting. After reading the Van's instructions, we gave it a shot on the right wing, but just could not get the wing spar to go into the spar box. Next, we tried the left wing, and no go after numerous attempts to align. Putting a good light on the issue revealed the spar box was smaller compared to the spar.

A quick email to Van's technical support, and received a quick reply from Sterling saying 'you may be fighting a spar box that is a bit narrow' ... and that the spar box has a bit of play, not obvious to me on Wed.

On Saturday, time to try again. This time Ken and Debbie assisted. I had on hand a roughly .5" x 1.5" wood trim which just fit nicely from inside the fuse into the spar box, just moving the spar enough to easily insert the wing spar. I carefully tap into place the wood 'spacer' with the rubber persuader, and it was easily removed once the wing was installed.

Lubricated hardware 7/16 bolts (Harbor Freight) which the threaded section cut off, and the end rounded, were used to align the wing spar bolt holes in the spar box.

Thanks to Ken and Debbie for helping to get the wings on!
