Brief Description:  Rudder - Copmpleted Build

Completed building the rudder...
• The initial test fitting was good for the rudder, using only the top and bottom rod end bearings for the AN3 bolts. The middle rod end bearing did not align to well, a bolt would start, but not clear the VS middle bracket.
• Removed the rudder, and re-checked the distance and compare to the call-outs on drawing 7.
• The middle rod end bearing was ~ 1/8” or so out of adjustment, re-adjusted per call-out.
• Re-installed the rudder, found the middle rod end bearing was still out just a smidge, removed the rudder, and turned the bearing 1/2 turn.
• Re-installed the rudder, all rod end bearings now accept the AN3 bolts cleanly.
• Rudder clears the VS and meets the rudder stop on the right side cleanly. On the left side the rudder vertical spar contacts the fuse skin just prior to the rudder stop.
• After some inspection, I realized the rudder vertical spar flanges are not really 90 degrees, they are played out a bit due to the skin being rivet and the rudder being about 4” on the forward edge, and 1/8” on the trailing edge. I’ll need to bend the flange inboard to prevent it from contacting the fuse skin, allowing the stop to do its thing. I’ll do this when I install the bottom fairing during the lighting installation.

I am building this RV8, not an 8-A… which means at some point I will need to gain the skills required for flying a tail dragger.

In early October I am paying a visit to Greg Koontz at his Sky Ranch for a two day conventional gear course. Given that I last flew PIC in December of 2013, when I delivered my PA28 to Ocala FL to its new owner, I felt like I needed to knock off some rust regarding take-off and landings.

A CFI friend of mine agreed, and we took a C172 around the patch for about an hour +20, doing ~ 10 or so touch and goes. I can’t say that any of them were great, one was not good, and the most were ok, nothing to brag on. At least I did not break anything… I was continually surprised with just how much back pressure was required
