Brief Description:  Left Seat Frame, covered with Ceconite

Since I have the materials on hand to cover the seat frames, I decided to give the Stewart System a try by attaching the Ceconite 101 to the left front seat frame. I purchased these materials to learn about the process by doing the seats first. Practice for the real thing on the fuselage and control surfaces.

I cleaned the frames with the heavy duty cleaner from Stewart Systems. I cut the Ceconite about 3 inches big all around. Then I put a coat of EkoBond Fabric Cement (glue) around the outside of the seat back frame. You have to wait for it to get tacky, about 5 minutes, and watch it turn from smurf blue to a kind of green. Then you just press the fabric in place and trim it to fit the frame. Then you run an iron around the perimeter to make a bond line to hold the fabric while you finish gluing it. The Stewart System manual says to apply the glue to the fabric to soak through and bond to the first layer of glue. My first try at this was OK, but it didn't seem to really bond that well.

Before doing the next frame (the seat bottom) I read the notes at the back of the manual that were from one of their seminars. They used the iron to bond the fabric all the way around, and to help shrink the corners and such so that it fits and sticks better. I tried this on the second frame and it made a big difference. I don't know what I am missing in the regular instructions, but that's more ironing than just a little bond line. I guess that's why they want you to go to the seminars.

After this, the second frame came out better. I went back over the first frame with the iron, and it seemed to help some, so maybe it'll be OK. After the glue dries over night I'll try to shrink the fabric.
