Brief Description:  Station B Bulkhead

The bulkhead at Station B underneath the floor boards is an area of confusion among builders, and the AviPro people have tried to make it as clear as possible in the manual.

It is intended to go at the rear of the tube and be mounted to the floorboards with a flange at the top facing aft, and a flange at the bottom facing forward for a place for the tunnel to attach. This piece isn't in the plans. In the plans there is an arched tube, small diameter, welded in this location instead of the aluminum bulkhead. However, the bulkhead is a better idea, since it is easier to attach the other boot cowl peices to this than to a small steel tube.

Problem for me is this: AviPro says in their manual that tabs have been provided at the rear of the tube at Station B, where the bulkhead can be bolted on - but my tabs are at the front of the tube! I e-mailed Mark and Budd, and they said there were some kits where they were inadvertently reversed and put on the front. They weren't absolutely sure placing the bulkhead at the front would work with the other pieces, but since I suggested that I would try it this way, they were supportive of this idea.

Because I needed the firewall mounted to clamp the tunnel onto, I decided to go ahead and install the firewall so I could check the fit of the tunnel. I think the bulkhead will work just fine like this, and will allow me to use the tabs as they are intended. I'll get a much more secure bolted-on bulkhead attached to the fuselage instead of the floorboards.

All of the other panels have plenty of overlapping material for this to work just fine, so I am proceeding to install the floorboards in this area without having to be concerned about how the bulkhead mounts to them.
