Brief Description:  Engine hung today!

Torqued all engine mount to firewall nuts to bolts. Stayed pretty close to 175 inch pounds on most nuts, used additional washers to get castle nuts to line up wth holes. Installed cotter pins. Removed rudder and horizontal stabilizer since it might hit garage door when it's up on all wheels. Positioned engine on front of engine mount and raised to approximate height needed to guide engine onto mount. Placed all Lord motor mounts onto engine mount and guided engine back onto the mount. Installed first bolt on upper right which was very easy and snugged down nut and washer until motor mount bottomed out. Adjusted height as needed to get second bolt on upper left side and snugged down the nut and washer. Placed large washer between lower right motor mount and engine and worked into alignment. Third bolt went in with minor rocking of engine. Nut andd washer placed and snugged down as before. Placed another large washer between mount and engine on lower left side and lined up. Fourth bolt installed while apply light pressure to motor mount to line up. Nut and washer installed and snugged down. Time from first bolt to last was 35 minutes. Went onto Vans Airforce Forum to see what others did about torquing motor mount nuts and bolts. Nearly everyone says a torque wrench is impossible to get on and to tighten after nut bottoms out enough to get castle nuts to line up with hole. I practiced using a torque wrench in a vise to see how much arm pressure I needed to get to recommended torque range for AN7 bolts. I then used approximately the same lenght wrench and tightened all nuts until castles lined up with the hole. Installed cotter pins. I feel confident that I have an acceptable but not too much torque on the nuts. Removed hoist. Engine hanging free. Worked on upper ribs and subpanel structure aft of firewall. I had not riveted them in yet and so needed to deburr and dimple everything. Dimpled firewall holes for ribs.
