Brief Description:  Tested interior paint options (Part 1)

With current downtime waiting for fuselage kit to arrive, took the opportunity to test some rattle can paint options for the interior of the cabin. I still am leaning towards getting the carpet and side panel option in the RV-12 package, but there will still be places that will be exposed that will need to be painted. If I don't get all the Van's options for the interior I'll definitely need good paint coverage - not to mention the roll bar that will be visable to the outside in any scenario. Since I don't have firm plans for the exterior color scheme, I want to use something neutral. "Grey" seems to be the color that likely goes with many of the color options running through my mind right now.

I reached out to Tony Territore on the VansAirForce site as I've always been impressed with the look of his interior and the quality of his build. He got back to me quickly, recommending the Rust-oleum brand grey paint he used. So I picked up a can of that, as well as a few others. I had some here at home already.

My testing plan, was to prime several small pieces of scrap aluminum that I have on hand in the standard way I've done the kit to date. When dry, I would layer on several of the paint options. After one overnight drying period I would then do a scratch test to guage the durability differences. All of my priming is being done with Mar-hyde Singe Stage Self Etching Primer (light grey). A little more expensive than other primers, but I've been very pleased with its coverage. Like the interior of all the wing & tail parts, I scuff up with red scotch brite pads, clean with acetone and then prime.
For the test paints, I did single and two coat options for two of the paints (Tony mentioned that was his process.) The four I tested were as follows

A) Rust-oleum Painter's Touch SATIN granite. Single and Double Coat
B) Rust-oleum Painter's Touch GLOSS winter grey. Single and Double Coat
C) Rust-oleum Metallic Finish grey
D) Rust-oleum Gloss Protective Enamel (grey)
