After much additional research, I've changed priming strategy and am now using AFS's one part primer/sealer product distributed by Aircraft Spruce. There's no mixing/thinning involved, it dries quick, seals against moisture penetration, has low VOC, passes accelerated salt spray corrosion tests and is water cleanup.
As I hurried the prep and HVLP spraying given the rapidly falling outside temperatures; the results are more functional than cosmetic.
