I decided to layup the aft pad in a conventional way one ply at a time. Results look good. The pen marks are very handy in keeping the ply stack in position and working the ply drop off. I then peel plied the result. I will compare this result with the ones I "pre-pregged" on the bench. Time includes cutting the plys.
