Brief Description:  Hung the engine

I gathered information on engine hanging techniques and reviewed Van's instructions and the plans. You must be careful to follow the plans as the engine mounting can be confusing. The top and bottom mounts are assembled differently. I had my dad, Bob and son, Curt as well as two guys from the Eastside EAA chapter, Steve Hoffman and Mike Robbins to help with the hanging. Mike was extremely helpful as he has built three planes including his RV-8 and has helped other builders hang engines. It went very well with the job mostly completed in about 45 minutes. We installed the two lower mounts first followed by the upper ones. The first two go in very easily and the last two are more difficult as the engine mounting holes have to line up with the dynafocal mounts. Mike had two tapered stel "bullets" that are forced through the mounts by the mounting bolts, and as they do this, the engine and mount are forced into allignment and the bolts follow. After the job was done we posed for a photo. I then finished securing the mounting nuts. I needed two washers under each nut to have the cotter pin fit within the slot on the nut. I secured the cotter pins, removed the engine hoist and lowered the fuselage tail.
