Brief Description:  Electronic Ignition Troubleshooting

I spent the day troubleshooting the cause of the engine running rough when on the Electronic Ignition during the first engine start. Researching the issue, other builders mentioned that most LightSpeed Ignition problems are caused by faulty electrical and vacuum connections so I began there. First I inspected and resealed the vacuum line connections from the engine to the LSE control box. No obvious problems found there. Next I looked at the electronic wiring and soon discovered a problem that may be the cause of the rough engine. A wiring harness runs from the flywheel sensor to the LSE controller, and this wire was brushing againse the edge of the flywheel and had worn away a small bit of the wire insulation. This could easily be the cause for the engine problems as this flywheel sensor signals the electronic ignition controller and this signal may have been interrupted because of the contact with the flywheel.

I made an L bracket that will route this wire bundle away from the flywheel. I also put some RTV sealant over the worn insulation.

I will continue to check the rest of the Lightspeed wiring and phasing of the ignition, but I think this is the cause of the rough engine.
