Brief Description:  Align the Gear Leg Fairings

The process for installing and correctly aligning the gear leg fairings is time consuming but apparently critical in avoiding any yawing tendencies in the aircraft.

First off the aircraft has to be lifted off the gear so that the legs relax into the flying position and the fuselage is level both longitudionally and horizontally. I used the lift table placed under the fuselage at the wing spar to lift the plane off the gear. I also raised the tail to the level flying position and supported this with a table and shims. I also tied the tail down to prevent any nose down movement, as the tail is very high in this position.

The next step is to drop a plumb line to get a centerline marked on the floor then take a position on the fairing, find it's distance from the centerline, then at the rear of the aircraft get a position that is also at the same distance from the centerline and heigth from the ground as the point on the fairing. Using a post (I used a light stand) you run a string line around these points, which places these two strings parallel to the centerline of the aircraft. By adjusting the fairing until the aft edge is equidistant from each string, the fairing is also parallel to the centerline, which is the goal. You repeat this at a few points on each fairing, and when you are happy you tighten it down.

After the intersection fairings are installed that will secure the leg fairing into this aligned position, so you won't have to repeat this process every time a fairing is removed.
