Manual Reference:  Fixing a Mistake
Brief Description:  Used a pattern to drill rather than match drilling

Following someone elses written instructions on wing construction caused a mistake on the main rib(14) at station 125.375. That's the outermost rib at the end of the wing. I used a 4-hole drilling pattern I made from a piece of aluminum to repeat the drilling of 4 holes in the rear flanges of the main wing ribs number 6 through 14 where they will attach to the rear spar. Everything was fine until I realized the rear spar had a doubler plate riveted onto the back of it at station 125.375 where the aileron stuff will we added later. That doubler plate already had 4 predrilled holes to use for match drilling into rib14. Those were supposed to be the governing holes so I unhappily drilled from the rear doubler through the rear spar and the rib flange and wound up with mis matched holes in the main rib flange. I had 8 holes now instead of 4. What to do... Took pictures, sent them to Vans and asked if the rib was ruined. Vans responded with great help. No, the rib would be ok. Use a piece of aluminum angle, secure it to the rib web with 4 rivets and then re-match drill from behind, again through the rear spar doubler, rear spar, wing rib flange and this additional angle to secure the rib properly. Just remember to use longer rivets on those 4 holes.
I slept better after I made the repair. I had to trim the angle to fit inside the main rib flange. Additional rivets will be coming through that rear spar when the airleron brackets will be added soon. They will be very close to the main rib flange and I don't want the piece of angle protruding into that work space. If it stays inside the rib flange, everything will be OK.
