Brief Description:  Elevator Control System #6

Well...the long break is finally over...sure hope to be able to spend more regular time on this project. 9 months....unbelievable...life has been non-stop saturation!!

Anyway...the first thing I need to do is correct a few things. Before the long break, I had spoke with the Vans tech folks about the clearance, or lack thereof, between the elevator horns and the fwd sid of the aft bulkhead when full aft stick (up elevator) is applied. I have the up and down elevator control stops adjusted where I want them, but there is literally .001" of clearance. Van's says it's more preferable to shave off some metal from the elevator horn than having it strike the bulkhead. The good news is that it won't take much and there is plenty of material, so it won't weaken anything, and that it's only the left control horn that needs to be trimmed because it sits further aft.

The other thing that is bothering me has to do the aft control stick. I think I removed too much material from the bolt bushing the attaches the stick to the control column, reducing the circumferance of the bushing too much. The smaller bushing now allows a slight amount of play that transmits through the whole control system. It's very slight, but it's noticeable (and not perfect). So I think I need to make another call...and possibly order a new bushing...

UPDATE on01/24/12: Trimmed the Lt elevator horn using a dremel. Worked good, now have about .060 clearance. Cleaned and painted the trimmed area for corrosion control.
