Brief Description:  Painted Rudder Skin and Stiffeners

After cleaning and etching the rudder skin and stiffeners with the AFS etching compound, I broke out the primer and paint gun in my garage for the first time. As predicted about 80% turned out OK. I got quite a few runs, and I cussed my cheap paint gun ($14.99 special) a few times, but all in all I got good coverage. The biggest lesson I learned is that I need to build some kind of paint tray with chicken wire or something. Hanging the feather-light stiffeners was a bad idea. They blew around to much when spraying them. They needed to be lying on a paint screen or something. The AFS primer dries to touch in 5 minutes, so it would be nothing to spray the coats on one side, then turn them over and spray the other. The finish was much smoother than the stabs. The stabs were done in a high airflow paintbooth and I learned that the paint was drying before it was able to flow out.

Anyway, the first painting experience in my garage turned out OK. It's not pretty, but it's effective. This AFS primer is kind of tough to work for a beginner, but I'm slowly learning it. I still like it because of it's friendly qualities, like being water based, low smell and vapor, and non-hazardous.
