I decided to place the ELT under the GIB (Girl In Back) floor. It won't be as easily accessed as would be ideal but life is a series of compromises. The ELT is very well protected in this location by the wing structure..or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I also want to mention a wonderful tool shown to me this week after EAA 43's weekly lunch by RV-8 flier Jim Gray (he has a beautiful plane). It's made by Knipex and is a parallel jaw plier. What makes it wonderful is you can easily squeeze a nutplate rivet with it along the wing skin side where getting a rivet squeezer in is very difficult. Your local Snap-on/Matco guy has them for about $80, but you can save $30 on Amazon. Worth every penny either way.
