Brief Description:  Engine Cowling - Pt 22

My aircraft has dual exhuast mufflers and I need to install a intake scoop for the cabin heat. Drawing from the previous experience of another Bearhawk builder I purchased two carbon fiber NACA scoops from Bonehead Composites in lieu of the much cheaper fiberglass scoops (the other Bearhawk builder found his fiberglass scoops had melted due to the exhaust heat).

I played with the location of the scoop in relation to the exhaust mufflers to find a place where the scoops would sit flat (without tension) providing a easy route for the SCAT tubing to connect the scoop and the muffler.

One really nice feature of this set is the outlet nozzle can be located in pretty much any direction and when the hole is cut for the outlet nozzle, it will nest inside the ball of the scoop housing.

After determining where I wanted the NACA scoop located, I made a template from poster board of the outside edges and then cutuout the interior shape. I drilled two fastener holes for locating the template.

I then placed the scoop in the location I had chosen and drilled the two fastener holes. Next I placed the template on the outside of the cowling and cleco'd it in place and traced my cutout location. I proceeded to make the cutout but left the edges a bit proud of my mark so I could fine-tune the cutout.
