Got a bit more done on the cockpit fit-out today, having completed the centre section cover and the fuel valve mounting plate and cover.
Wasn't a lot of fabrication work with these pieces, so it all went together quite quickly. The only tricky bit was aligning the heat baffle properly prior to match driling holes. This would have been very easy to get off-centre, which would not be a good thing. I spent quite a bit of time making sure the baffle was properly aligned and securely clamped in place before drilling any holes.
Actually, there was one other tricky bit, and that was getting a neat, consistent, bend on the heat box louvres. The instructions just say to clamp a piece of angle and bend by hand, times eight. Sounds easy. In practice I needed to also clamp a solid piece of flat bar to the back of the structure so that only the louvre bent, and not the whole cover piece. Anyway, I got there.
After the usual smoothing, deburring, dimpling, prepping, priming etc, I riveted the various nutplates in position, and the heat baffle in place, and then placed the assembly in position. All good.
I finished the day off by also assembling the mounting plate and cover section for the fuel valve. Although I'm not having manual elevator trim, I left a small portion of the angled plate (forward of where the fuel valve handle sits) in place. I have an idea for a centre console, and this may be a good place to attach something later. If not, then I can always cut it back.
Anyway, that'll do for today. I have a date with a BBQ at a local charity function. Doing a bit of volounteer work with the local Rotary Club.
