Brief Description:  Instrument Panel Cut-Outs

Well, today I bit the bullet and made a decision regarding switch layout. I'd been trying to include two dimmer knobs in the lineup, and it just wasn't working for me. As soon as I decided to locate the dimmers away from the switches, then it all came together much better.

The middle picture below shows what I ended up with. Also, rather than have all switches evenly spaced, I wanted a clear distinction for the Fuel Pump and Flap switches, that's why there's a couple larger gaps. These are the only two switches that you need to reach for in routine flight operations, and I figure that to have spacing as shown, then it's just another means of clearly identifying them. Anyway, that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

So, with the decision made I then set about cutting the first couple holes. I have to be extremely careful with these as the switch bezel only protrudes past the cutout by about 0.5mm. Therefore, very slow going.

Also today my much sought after Flap switch arrived......and I love it. Most homebuilt aircraft have a completely different looking switch for the flaps, but I wanted mine to match in with the rest. I therefore searched high and low for a Honeywell AML series switch and, after much saga with several potential suppliers (minimum order quantities of 50, minimum spend of US$200, and/or ridiculous US$50 flat rate shipping charges) I eventually found joy with US electronics distributor, Mouser. They were awesome. I could order just one, pricing was fair (bit still expensive for a rocker switch), no freight charge, and I had it in about a week. That's Mouser folks. They're the best.

I finally decided on a layout for the switches. The gaps are to distinguish Fuel Pump and Flaps.
