Last weekend I tackled the dreaded task of trying to get the brakes working. Some months ago I had no end of difficulty with the park brake valve. It just wouldn't work. Last week I found the problem. I didn't attach the control cable. Doh!
Even though I was sure this was the issue, I decided to take the valve out again anyway just to check that it operates correctly. I also made up a neat little invention that holds the mounting bolts on the engine side of the firewall, so I can get the valve in and out by myself. I forgot to take a picture but will add one later if I remember.
The valve tested perfectly on the bench so I put it back in and connected up the hoses. Today I filled the system with brake fluid again and discovered that I'd got the hoses the wrong way round. Left pedal operated the right brake and vice-versa. Groan! I drained the system and swapped the hoses over at the pedals, then filled back up yet again. This time it all worked. Hooooray!
I notice that the pedals do not move anywhere near as much as I thought they would. There's hardly any travel at all. Nonetheless, they work.
