Brief Description:  Brake System Issues

A mate of mine, and fellow RV builder, once told me that there will be days that I just want to put an axe through the aeroplane. Well, lets just say it's fortunate there was not an axe handy today.

This brake system is giving me no end of grief. After yesterday, when I ended the day with a stuck brake master cylinder, I figured there's no getting out of it ..... I need to pull the cylinder out. This meant dismantling much of the interior so I could get my large frame inside, then, working in the tight confines of the space under the instrument panel, I removed the torublesome master cylinder. Guess what, it's fine. And so is the pedal movement. Gee, what now?

I studied various drawings and eventually discovered that I'd installed the PVPV-D park brake valve around the wrong way. That is, I had the inlet side plumbed to the brake calipers, and the outlet side plumbed too the master cylinders. Bugger.

I then spent several hours removing the valve from the firewall (behind the pedals), and swapping the inlet/outlet fittings over at the workbench. I then spent anouther hour reinstalling and replumbing the system. What a relief when it was all done. My body was aching all over from laying and working in the cockpit.

I gleefully refilled the system with brake fluid and reinstalled the pilot seat so that I could get inside and test. Oh no, now neither of the pedals will move! WTF! I took the seat back out, laid back inside on the floor, and disconnected the park brake control lever. I then manually rotated the park brake valve around a full 360 degrees, testing the pedals at 90 degree increments, but still no joy. For some reason the bloody PVPV-D valve is not allowing fluid to pass, resulting in no ability to push on the brake pedals at all.

I've sent off an email to Matco Tech Support and am now awaiting a response.

Feeling very deflated right now, knowing that it's very likely I'll be back inside and removing this valve again.

At least I had a tasty lunch. Toasted roast lamb sandwich. Yum :-)
