Some more work today on the air filter box by fitting the alternate air inlet mechanism. This is required in the unlikely event that the air filter becomes so blocked that it can no longer supply sufficient air quantities to the fuel servo. A simple pull on the "Alt Air" knob in the cockpit, and a trap-door is opened allowing unfiltered air direct entry into the fuel servo.
This is a "get-out-of-jail-free" feature, and cannot be reversed. Once the Alt Air door is opened, it cannot be shut from within the cockpit. The idea is it buys you enough time to find somewhere to land and rectify the primary problem.
Anyway, I worked on this today.
A couple other things I also worked on:
* reinforced the underside of the oil inspection hatch, to minimise risk of flexing in-flight (picture 2 below);
* recitifed an error when trimming the fibreglass air filter cover ............. I didn't read forward in the instructions. If I did, I would have known not to trim the fibregalss air filter cover forward of the bend line in the top plate. The fibreglass cover also needs to be bent down. Bugger! I glued the trimmed pieces back onto the fibreglass cover. I'll also apply some fibreglass cloth when the resin has set.
