After a month working around the house, in readiness for Christmas Day with the family, today I got back out to the hangar for some proper work on Miss Tango.
I was going to install the VHF Com antenna in the space under the pilot side gear leg weldment, however when I drilled the mounting holes for my doubler plate I realised that it's going to foul with the gear leg fairing. Bugger.
I decided to relocate the antenna further aft, nearer to where the step is. This will also help with radio transmissions as the antenna will not be blocked by the wing surface.
I started by cutting an access hole in the baggage area floor, then mounting my doubler plate to the bottom fuselage skin. I re-routed the antenna coax to this space (which required a small hole in one of the fuselage ribs), and also made up a cover plate.
I'm happy with my decision to locate the antenna further aft. It will help with quality of radio signals, I'm sure.
