Brief Description:  3: Flap Control Rods - Part 1

With the fuel tank attach brackets finished, my next job was fitting the control rods for the flaps. Gee, the instructions are extremely vague for this, with zero mention of how or where to make the hole in the fuselage in either the instructions or on the drawings. To know what to do I had to resort to checking other builder's logs, and this is where thoroughly documenting the detail of a build proved very helpful. After scrolling through posts for a dozen builders I finally came across a guy by the name of Cleve Thompson who had some good pictures of the cut-out, and brief description of how he made it. Thank you Cleve.

Anyway, it turns out there's a small guide hole on the underside of the fuselage that is meant to be where you start drilling. In my case (Quickbuild kit) this hole had a rivet in it, I assume by mistake. I drilled out the rivet and enlarged the hole with a unibit to a little over 1/2".

It also turns out the small elongated diagonal hole on the fuselage side is also a guide hole. Who woulda guessed? Just in case the angle of the elongated hole had some significance, I marked a few layout lines, before then drilling a pilot hole smack in the centre. See pics below. I then enlarged this hole, also to a little over 1/2". The two holes, one in the fuselage side, and one in the fuselage bottom, where now almost touching.

I then used a hacksaw to "join" the two holes, and then a die grinding bit in my cordless drill to help shape where necessary.

Continued in next log entry...........

It seems this oblong hole is actually a guide hole. Pitty the instructions don't make any mention.
