Brief Description:  3: Canopy Skirt Hole Duplicator

One of the tricky parts of match drilling the rear canopy skirt to the canopy frame is actually knowing where to drill the matching holes. There is a blind hole underneath, in the tubular steel canopy frame, but it doesn't go right through (hence, it is blind). You cannot match drill from underneath.

The instructions actually say that you must use a hole duplicator. This is a tool that's readily available at Aircraft Tool Supplies, however I didn't want to wait 6 weeks to get one, so made one from a couple strips of aluminium and a few rivets.

I simply rivetted two strips together at one end, as shown, then drilled a hole through the other end of both pieces. I dimpled one hole and superglued a countersunk rivet into the dimple. Voila, I now had a hole duplicator.

The third picture below shows how it works. You slide the bottom part of the tool under the piece to be match drilled until the superglued rivet falls into the hole that you are match drilling to. The top half of the tool now shows exactly where the hole is. It's then an easy task to get a hole started from the top, remove the tool, and final drill. Works a treat.
