Brief Description:  1: Canopy Latch

An eventful start this morning while fitting the canopy latch handle.

First I cut the latch handle tube to length, and filed smooth. All good. Then I marked and cut the handle tube to length (so the exterior latch handle sits flush against the canopy), and again, all good.

But then it turned pear shape.

When drilling and tapping the holes for the exterior latch handle I accidently drilled an oversize hole in the back of the handle piece, which meant I could not tap it to suit an 8-32 screw. Bugger! I decided on drilling all holes oversize so that I could use a 10-32 screw instead. That worked, however the flush screw head is now a little more prominent than it should be. I'll leave it for now, but if I find it bugs me then I'll order new handle pieces and start again.

Okay, then I moved on to cutting out the latch arm itself, and I really stuffed it. I didn't take enough care when marking out my cut lines and ended up with the shape you see in the second picture below. There are two problems with this ..... a) the metal "hook" is cut way too thin, and b) it doesn't hold pressure on the canopy frame very well.

I am definitely going to order a replacement latch arm (C-654-1) and start again on this. In fact I might as well order new handles at the same time.

Oh well, although I made a mistake here, at least it is on a relatively minor part. Am taking a coffee break for a while before I move on to the next step.
