Brief Description:  1: Trimming the Windscreen

Today I set about trimming the windscreen to the contours of the forward fuselage, and with a distinct lack of detail in the Vans instructions ("trim to match the front fuselage") I decided to tread very carefully.

I made my first cut by taking off just the molded flange, which I know does not form part of the finished windscreen, and tested the fit. I could then see that I needed to take some more off where the curve radius of the fuselage is greatest, so conservatively marked a new line, and cut again.

I repeated this process about three times until I felt the fit was pretty good. I then turned my attention to the windscreen rear edge, and noted that the gap between it and the sliding canopy (with the canopy slid fully closed) was not consistent all the way round. I measured the gap at the widest point, and marked a cut line on the windscreen that would create this same gap all the way round (once cut then the windscreen can be shifted rearward to close the gap).

With this cut made I then positioned the windscreen with tape, as per the pictures below, and verified the finished height relative to the sliding canopy. All good, so no shims required, except perhaps for some at the windscreen bottom edges where the sliding canopy frame has bowed out a bit (after fitting the plexiglass).
